Richard Duane Vorland Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Richard Vorland, 90 of Clear Lake passed away Monday, June 27, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City with family at his side. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2022 at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave N, Clear Lake, IA 50428 with Reverend Carol Kress officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Township Cemetery, rural Clear Lake. Military Honors will be presented by the Clear Lake VFW. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Richard Duane Vorland was born January 13, 1932 near Eagle Grove, IA, the son of Helge and Louise (Thompson) Vorland. Growing up in Humboldt County, Richard graduated in 1952 from Vernon Consolidated High School. He soon began his honorable service in the United States Army, where he served in Korea as a mechanic. On June 12, 1955 he married the love of his life, Virginia Krause at the Renwick United Methodist Church. The couple traveled following Richard’s work in construction, working on the Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona, as well as numerous others all over the country. The two were soon blessed with three children, Ron, Susan and David. The family eventually made their home near Clear Lake in the early 1970’s where Richard and Virginia began to farm the land. Throughout his life Richard took great pride in his meticulous nature, even if it meant it took a little longer to finish projects. He was a tough, hardworking gentleman who did everything - and did it well. A little pain never startled Richard, whether it was nicking a finger with a blade or tool, he just kept on working. He had a passion and appreciation for nature. Whether it was the beautiful rock laying on the side of the road, a precious piece of turquoise, or the countless birds sharing their song on the farm, it was truly the little things that brought him joy. Richard looked forward to traveling the country and camping with Virginia and his family. Throughout the years he had almost made it to every US state, and passed along this love of travel to his children and their children. Richard’s greatest joy in life was his family. He took great pride in teaching them to be calm, humorous - sometimes a little stubborn - hard working people. Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 68 years, Virginia; Ron (Barb) Vorland of Oregon, Susan Vorland of Clear Lake, and David Vorland of Ventura; grandchildren, Mike, Ryan and Conner Vorland, Josh Diekhuis, Noah (Macy) Diekhuis, Christian Vorland, Emily and Harley Vorland; great-grandchildren, Ellery and Jolee Diekhuis, Courtney Latham, Mackenzie Vorland, Chloee Vorland and Max Lapoint; his cherished four legged companion, Penny; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Pearl McClamrock; brothers, Herman, Eugene, Howard, Glen, Edmond and Kenny; two granddaughters, Katie and Amanda Vorland.
