He grew up on the family farm near Floyd along with his sister, Dorothy. He attended and graduated from Floyd High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force. On August 10, 1963 Jerry was united in marriage to Bonnie Shultz. Together they made their home in Mason City and were blessed with two children, Verlynn and Vernon. In 1987 the family moved to Portland, Oregon. Jerry loved the great outdoors and embraced camping and woodworking. He loved traveling and all of the adventures that came along with it! Jerry returned to Iowa in 1999, following Bonnie’s passing and settled again in Mason City. Jerry still kept busy and found himself gathering with friends across the Midwest, playing cards, attending potlucks, and creating countless memories along the way. It was through this group of friends that Jerry met Jerri Fournier, and they were blessed with 20 years together. Jerry never lost his love for travel and adventure. He and Jerri continued to enjoy many trips and vacations in recent years and especially loved their visits to Florida, Branson, and Oregon, and traveling to visit family. Jerry was a devoted grandfather and loved every minute shared with his granddaughters, Alison and Isabella. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Verlynn Rowell, Salem, OR and Vernon Gabel and his daughters, Alison and Isabella, Salem , OR; Geraldine "Jerri" Fournier and her family, Mason City; and members of the Stewart family; as well as extended relatives and many friends. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Mary Gabel; his wife, Bonnie; daughter in law, Jamie Gabel; and sister, Dorothy (Wilbur) Stewart.
