Gary Mennen

March 18, 1950 - March 12, 2022

Mason City native Gary E. Mennen, 71, died on Saturday morning, March 12, 2022. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Epiphany Parish – St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 5th St SE, Mason City, IA 50401 with Reverend Jake Dunne, celebrant. Gary will be laid to rest at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Gary’s family will greet relatives and friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Monday, March 14, 2022 at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Gary Mennen Memorial Fund. Gary was born in Mason City on March 18, 1950, the firstborn child of Gordon and Patricia (Cornelius) Mennen. Gary attended Madison Elementary School, St. Joseph’s School and graduated from Newman High School in 1968. He played on Newman’s first football team in 1967. Gary also played basketball. He graduated from NIACC in 1970. On July 7, 1973, Gary was united in marriage to Nancy Reed in Mason City and their son John was born in 1975. He worked at Curries Company for 44 years before retiring in 2015. Gary loved woodworking, golfing, and enjoyed the outdoors with long walks and bicycle rides. He enjoyed watching Big Ten football, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, and professional golf. He cherished trips to Minneapolis to visit family and watch the Twins play baseball. Gary enjoyed playing cards with friends and relatives. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and looked forward to singing with the choir. Most of all, Gary loved his family and cherished time spent with his grandchildren, Haley and Will. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son John (Christy) Mennen; grandchildren Haley and Will; sisters, Monica (David) Barnes and Loretta (Jim) Ellsworth; brothers, Gordy (Vicki), Doug (Kendra) and Jim (Kris) Mennen; sister-in-law, Valerie Mennen-McClary, as well as many extended family members and friends. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Patricia Mennen; brother, Terry Mennen; grandparents; nephew Jason Mennen; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
